• In 2007, conditioned Hard Spun to second place finishes in both the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He trained the son of Danzig to victories in the Grade I King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga; Grade II Lane’s End Stakes and Kentucky Cup Classic both at Turfway Park; and the Grade III LeComte Stakes at the Fair Grounds.
• In 2008, conditioned Eight Belles to a second place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
• Won the $1 million Grade II Delaware Handicap with Island Sand in
2005. The previous year, Jones won the Grade I Acorn Stakes at Belmont
Park with the Kentucky-bred daughter of Tabasco Cat.
• Finished second in the Delaware Park trainer standings in 2008 with a record of 68 winners from 241 starters.


• In 2006, the first full season Jones stabled at Delaware Park, he finished sixth in the trainer standings with a record 40 wins, 39 seconds, and 30 thirds from 180 starts. He followed by finishing sixth in the trainer standings with a record of 42 winners, 37 seconds, and 48 thirds from 222 starters in 2007.
• Former commercial farmer in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He grew corn, tobacco, and soy beans and raised cattle and hogs.

• First trainer to win seven consecutive training titles at Delaware
Park (2002 through 2008) since Grover “Buddy” Delp won seven in a row
from 1963 through 1969.

• In 2000, he won three of seven Claiming Crown races at Canterbury Park. He won the $48,000 Express with Spit Polish, the $57,600 Glass Slipper with A Lot of Mary and the $116,250 Jewel with B Flat Major.
• In 2001, he won two Claiming Crown races and in 2002 he won one.
• Saddled Leave It Beezer to victories in the Gr. III Salvator Mile Handicap and the Grade III Baltimore Breeders' Cup Handicap in 2000.
• Lake began training steadily in 1991 with one horse.

• Elected to the National Racing Hall of Fame in 1990.
• Trained Storm Cat to victory in the Gr. I Young America at the Meadowlands in 1985.
• He is the all-time leading steeplechase trainer by money won.
• Sheppard arrived in the United States in 1961 by way of Eton College and the British Stock Exchange.
• One of the first people he met was legendary steeplechase trainer Burley Cocks. For the next nine months, Sheppard worked at Cocks' farm in Unionville, Pa. After a brief return to England, Sheppard spent the next two years riding races for Cocks, and estimates that he won on about 10% of 250 rides.

• Sheppard then turned to training and soon had a string of six horses.
• First winner as a trainer was Haffaday at the Rosetree Hunt Meeting in 1966.
• One of his first clients was George Strawbridge Jr., owner of Augustin Stable, and one of steeplechasing's most successful owners.
