Halifax County High School Golf Team Claims Back-to-Back Piedmont District Titles
The Halifax County High School golf team showcased their impressive skills once again as they clinched the Piedmont District regular season championship for the second consecutive year. They proved their mettle by defeating Mecklenburg County with a tight score of 304-309 at Kinderton Country Club in Clarksville. Led by Lukas Newton’s outstanding performance, Halifax County not only secured the top spot but also demonstrated great depth within their roster.
A Competitive Field
The battle for the top spot in the Piedmont District regular season was fierce, with several formidable opponents vying for the title. Magna Vista finished third with a score of 321, while Tunstall and Bassett secured the fourth and fifth spots respectively, scoring 328 and 366. Individual performances were also noteworthy, with GW-Danville’s Ella Payne shooting an impressive 81 and Martinsville’s Tyler Carr carding a solid 99.
Halifax County Shines
Lukas Newton proved to be the shining star of the Halifax County High School golf team, shooting an exceptional one under par 71. Newton’s remarkable performance not only secured him the title of the top scorer in the tournament but also propelled Halifax County towards victory. JD Cunningham and Brian Cole contributed significantly to the team’s success with scores of 76 and 77 respectively. Camden Jones rounded out the top four for Halifax County with a commendable score of 80. Jack Morgan and Nathan Hudson also played their part, with scores of 83 and 88 respectively.

Halifax County’s coach, Chris Lacks, praised his team’s resilience and performance throughout the regular season. Despite Mecklenburg County’s strong challenge, the Comets persevered and displayed a great team effort. Lacks acknowledged the crucial role played by Camden Jones, who scored an impressive 80 from the sixth spot, adding considerable depth to the team’s lineup. Lacks expressed his pride in Lukas Newton’s exceptional medalist score of 71 and his overall performance. Additionally, he credited JD Cunningham and Brian Cole for their solid play, which ultimately ensured victory over Mecklenburg County.

The tournament will take place at Caswell Pines Golf Course, offering a new set of challenges for the talented team.
