Davis Love III: Ryder Cup captaincy in 2025 is Tiger Woods’ if he wants it

by Joanne Miller

The search for the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain is on, and it seems that Davis Love III has a particular candidate in mind – Tiger Woods. Love, who has previously served as the U.S. captain in 2012 and 2016, believes that Woods would be the ideal choice to lead the American squad at Bethpage Black in 2025.

Speaking at the PGA Tour Champions’ Furyk and Friends event, Love stated, “We’ve got to call Tiger Woods and ask him.” Despite Woods being involved with the U.S. Ryder Cup team in various capacities, including as a vice-captain and the 2019 Presidents Cup captain, Love is uncertain whether Woods would accept the captainship.

One of the factors that may influence Woods’ decision is the amount of time and effort required to fulfill the role. Love recalled a conversation with Woods and Phil Mickelson, where they expressed reservations about the level of commitment needed to be a captain. However, Love remains hopeful that they can persuade Woods to take on the responsibility.

Woods has a history with Bethpage Black, having won the U.S. Open there in 2002. Whether he becomes the captain or not, Love believes that Team USA would benefit from having fresh blood at the helm moving forward. This would mean Love himself and possibly Fred Couples stepping aside to make way for new leadership.

Love expressed his willingness to make room for a new captain, stating, “They need to get rid of guys like Davis Love and probably Fred Couples and move on. I’m lobbying for it.” Despite his own selflessness, Love recognizes that the decision ultimately rests with Woods.

The speculation surrounding Woods as the potential captain has overshadowed previous suggestions that Mickelson could be next in line. However, Mickelson’s move to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit last year has made it unlikely that he will be considered for the role.

As golf fans eagerly await the announcement of the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain, all eyes are on Tiger Woods. His extensive experience with the U.S. team, his involvement in shaping the Ryder Cup process, and his impressive record make him a compelling choice. Whether Woods chooses to accept the captainship remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the decision will excite many golf fans around the world.
