Chattanooga Mocs Men’s Golf Team Seeks Second Win at Bearcat Invitational

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team is gearing up for the Bearcat Invitational, where they hope to secure their second win of the season. The event, hosted by Cincinnati at Coldstream Country Club, is a 2-day, 54-hole affair with an opening 36 on day one.

The Mocs are coming off a successful season-opening sweep at the Marquette Invitational at Erin Hills. Led by senior Samuel Espinosa, who shot 3-under at the USGA venue, the team captured both the team and individual crowns. This impressive performance marks the fifth team win and third individual medalist under Coach Blaine Woodruff.

Espinosa’s win at the Marquette Invitational was not only a personal achievement but also a historical one. It was his fourth career win, but his first as a Moc. Before transferring to Chattanooga, Espinosa had already won three times at King. Additionally, Espinosa’s win marked the first season-opening win for the team since the 2008-09 season.

Heading into the Bearcat Invitational, Espinosa leads the lineup for the Mocs. Joining him are Braedon Wear, John Houk, Garrett Engle, and Paul Conroy. Conroy, who won the squad’s 2022-23 scoring title, secured his spot in the lineup by winning the Bearcat qualifying school.

In addition to Espinosa’s strong performance, the entire team has shown consistency and skill. At the Marquette Invitational, Wear and Espinosa both finished within the top five, solidifying their spots in the lineup for the upcoming tournament.

The Mocs will be competing against a strong field at the Bearcat Invitational. Teams such as Arkansas State, BYU, UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, and Virginia Tech will be vying for the top spot. With their previous success and exceptional performances, the Chattanooga Mocs are in a great position to continue their winning streak.

The Coldstream Country Club, with its par 71 and 7,279-yard tract, will provide a challenging but fair test for all players. The team will need to rely on their skills and experience to navigate the course and come out on top.

As the Mocs prepare for the Bearcat Invitational, the coaching staff and players remain focused and determined. They have set their sights on achieving another victory and showcasing their talent on the national stage.
