Lexi Thompson Leads U.S. Team at Solheim Cup Opening Match

The highly anticipated Solheim Cup kicked off on Friday, and all eyes were on U.S. veteran Lexi Thompson as she took the opening tee shot. Thompson, who has had a challenging season so far, received a clear vote of confidence from her captain, Stacy Lewis. Lewis expressed her awe at Thompson’s performance during practice rounds, stating that her ball-striking looked better than it has in a long time.

Thompson was paired with Megan Khang and faced the young Swedish duo of Maja Stark and Linn Grant in the first foursomes match. The match began on a drivable par 4 opening hole, adding to the excitement of the tournament.

The European team, led by captain Suzann Pettersen, also had a surprise in their pairings. The Swedish rookies, Stark and Grant, not only asked to play together but also requested to head out first for their team. Pettersen granted their request, allowing them to make their Solheim Cup debut in an impactful way.

For the remaining three matches of the morning session, the European team revealed their partnerships. The matchups included Danielle Kang and Andrea Lee (U.S.) against Celine Boutier and Georgia Hall (Europe), Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz (U.S.) against Leona Maguire and Anna Nordqvist (Europe), and Ally Ewing and Cheyenne Knight (U.S.) against Charley Hull and Emily Pedersen (Europe). Each pairing brought its own storylines and dynamics to the tournament.

Notably absent from the opening session were Americans Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang. Vu, the breakout star of the year with two major wins, and Zhang, a dominant amateur turned professional, were not selected for the morning matches. However, U.S. captain Stacy Lewis assured that all 12 Americans would play in at least one of the two sessions on Friday.
