Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Bicycle Crash in Bethany

The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a tragic incident involving a fatal crash that occurred in Bethany on Tuesday morning. A bicyclist was involved in the incident, which led to serious injuries and, unfortunately, his death.

The incident took place on October 3, 2023, around 10:47 a.m. The bicyclist was traveling southbound on the shoulder of Coastal Highway, just south of the Indian River Inlet Bridge. At the same time, a 2020 Lexus was also traveling southbound in the left lane, approaching the bicyclist.

According to preliminary investigations, the bicyclist attempted to make a left turn, crossing from the right lane to the left lane in front of the approaching Lexus. This maneuver resulted in a collision between the bicyclist and the front of the Lexus, causing the bicyclist to be ejected.

The 71-year-old bicyclist from Hockessin, who was wearing a helmet, was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment of his serious injuries. Unfortunately, on October 5, 2023, the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and passed away. The name of the deceased is being withheld until his family has been notified of the tragic news.

On the other hand, the driver of the Lexus, a 62-year-old man from Ocean View, did not sustain any injuries during the crash.

In order to conduct a thorough investigation and remove any obstructions from the roadway, both southbound lanes of Coastal Highway were closed for approximately 2.5 hours.
