Tommy Fleetwood leaves a fan bloody at St. Andrews

by Joanne Miller

Tommy Fleetwood, fresh off his victory at the Ryder Cup, found himself in an unfortunate incident during the Alfred Dunhill Championship. In the second round of the tournament, Fleetwood hit a shot that struck a fan in the head, causing him to bleed profusely. The fan, identified as Andrew Summerskill, was attending the event when the stray shot hit him. He was seen holding a white cloth to his head to control the bleeding, surrounded by concerned fans.

Fleetwood, after realizing what had happened, went over to Summerskill to apologize for the incident. He also signed a glove for him as a gesture of goodwill. At this time, it is unknown if Summerskill required any medical attention.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time a golfer has inadvertently caused injury with a wayward shot. Adam Scott had a similar incident at the Open Championship, where he hit a spectator. Both Scott and Fleetwood took responsibility for their actions and signed gloves for the individuals they unintentionally harmed.

This incident comes just days after Fleetwood played a pivotal role in Team Europe’s victory at the Ryder Cup. The Englishman contributed three points to the team’s triumph, including a crucial win over Rickie Fowler that sealed the Europeans’ victory. Fleetwood’s overall record in the Ryder Cup now stands at 7-3-2.

However, Fleetwood appears to be experiencing a post-Ryder Cup hangover at St. Andrews. In the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, he shot a 1-over 73, placing him 11 shots behind leader Matthew Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, another member of Team Europe, currently holds a one-stroke lead over Grant Forrest and Nacho Elvira.

Despite this setback, Fleetwood’s recent success at the Ryder Cup highlights his abilities as a top golfer. As he continues to compete in tournaments, golf enthusiasts will be eagerly watching his performances on the course.

In conclusion, Tommy Fleetwood’s unfortunate incident at the Alfred Dunhill Championship serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of golf and the potential risks spectators face while watching the sport. Nevertheless, Fleetwood’s highly successful Ryder Cup campaign showcases his talents and makes him a player to watch in future tournaments.
